The Qur'an Calls Jesus the Word of Allah—What Does This Mean?

This is a  serious theological issue in Islam: The Qur'an itself gives Jesus (Isa) titles that imply eternality and divinity—which contradicts the Islamic belief that he was just a human prophet.

1. Surah 4:171 – Jesus is the "Word of Allah" and a "Spirit from Him"

"Indeed, the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, is the Messenger of Allah, and His Word (kalimatuhu) that He conveyed to Mary, and a Spirit from Him (ruhun minhu)..."
(Qur'an 4:171)

The problem for Islam is that:
The Word of God is eternal—it cannot be created or separate from Him.
If Jesus is the Word of God, then he must also be eternal.
If Jesus is eternal, then he is not merely human—he is divine.

2. Islam Teaches That Allah’s Word is Eternal

  • Islam teaches that the Qur’an is the uncreated, eternal Word of Allah.

  • Why? Because Allah's Word is inseparable from Him and has always existed.

  • If Allah’s Word is eternal, and the Qur'an itself calls Jesus the Word of Allah, then Jesus is also eternal.

Problem for Islam:

  • If the Qur'an is uncreated because it is Allah’s Word,

  • And Jesus is Allah’s Word,

  • Then Jesus must also be uncreated—which contradicts Islam’s claim that he is just a created prophet.

3. Jesus as the Word: A Concept Confirmed in Christianity

  • The Bible confirms this exact concept in John 1:1, 14:

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... The Word became flesh and dwelt among us."

  • The Qur’an unintentionally agrees with Christian doctrine by calling Jesus the "Word of Allah."

  • Islam tries to deny the divinity of Jesus, yet its own scripture gives Jesus divine attributes.

4. The Logical Contradiction for Islam

If the Word of Allah is eternal, then Jesus must be eternal.
If Jesus is eternal, then he cannot be a mere human prophet.
If Jesus is divine, then Islam's rejection of his divinity is false.

Islam cannot explain why Jesus is called the "Word of Allah" without contradicting itself.
The Qur'an inadvertently supports the Christian belief that Jesus is divine.
